Zimaad wa Tila (Ointments/ Medicated paste and Liniments)

Zimaad wa Tila (Ointments/ Medicated paste and Liniments) are used as methods of regimental therapies (Ilaj- bil-tadbeer). Both these methods viz. Zimaad wa Tila (Ointments/ Medicated paste and Liniments) are the medicinal formulations used by the Unani physician since antiquity.

Zimaad (Medicated paste/ Ointments) is a topical medication that is applied to body surface to treat some ailments. These are semisolid preparations of the crude drugs in powdered forms used for local application.

Tila (Liniments/ Embrocation) is a medicated topical preparation for application to the skin surface. Liniments have a similar or lesser viscosity than lotions and are rubbed in to create friction. It is a kind of medicated oil used externally for massage purpose.

The objectives of Zimaad wa Tila (Ointments/ Medicated paste and Liniments) are:

  • To combat pain of a particular organ e.g. headache (Suda’a), arthritis (waja-ul- mafaasil) and chest pain (waja us sadr) etc.
  • To cure swelling of a particular organ e.g. liver (Kabid), spleen (Tihaal) and stomach (m’eda) etc.
